work-life balance: are my scales faulty?

Is it just me, or is this work life balance idea a myth or just an impossible dream. It’s just that as a female human with daughter (5), partner, 2 cats and a fish, oh yes and working as a teacher 2 days and doing my PhD the other 3, sometimes I dream of a more balanced life. But I’m wondering if there is anyone out there, human, not robot, who has the scales of work and life evenly balanced? In fact I’m wondering if balance is even possible, may be there is another way to look at it, especially when work and family and life kind of blend and blur into each other. Am I the only mother out there with faulty scales?

  1. I think balance is possible if both men and women seek to achieve it in their work and family lives. It is not possible to achieve balance when only one half of the equation is working towards it, and when social and organisational entities don’t recognise the need for balance.

  2. I am really lookingforwrad to be able to answer your questions…. Possibly even provide (dare I say it) … support to each other.
I am about to enrol in PHD, have a two year old, run projects on a contractual basis, live on an island, oh and then there is that baby that is attached to my boob at regular intervals.
We moved to QLD for a balance in life – now I feel it is my job whilst satisfying everyones needs to make everyones dreams come true – including my own….
I look forward to having the time to read and participate in your study.

  3. Great Lauren. It’s kind of comforting to know there are alot of us out their in the same boat, trying to balance, trying to interconnect so that the boat doesn’t tip too far. I look forward to your input…

  4. Yes it is possible to balance. But it is up to the individual/s within the family just how much is possible. Some people have more skills at organisation or their well being is different (perhaps wheelchair bound) but it can be done. Balance is what works for the individual. All want different things from life and settle for different balances. so happiness lies with the individual/s capabilities. Balancing the comittments that all is capable for all the family to be happy.
